Certain levels feature areas called “flat” zones, where Mario is placed in a 2D side-scrolling environment similar to his appearance in the original Super Mario Bros. Mario can instantly warp to checkpoint flags scattered throughout each Kingdom once they are activated. Mario must search for and clear various objectives within each Kingdom to acquire Power Moons (power sources that allow Mario to access new Kingdoms) and other items. Mario 64 has been a popular platform for modders for years, as romhacks have added Odyssey's cap possession mechanic, added a level editor, and even turned it into an entirely new game. The Kingdoms of the game are based on the same exploration-based level design as Super Mario 64.
